The Pali Canon is the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. This article will try to summarize briefly what has been said about the dates of its composition, starting with general statements. The Theravada tradition dates most of the Canon to the time of the Buddha, whom in turn it dates about BC (historians give various later dates for him. The seven books of the Abhidhamma Pitaka, the third division of the Tipitaka, offer an extraordinarily detailed analysis of the basic natural principles that govern mental and physical processes. Whereas the Sutta and Vinaya Pitakas lay out the practical aspects of the Buddhist path to Awakening, the Abhidhamma Pitaka provides a theoretical.
The book is based primarily on the source material available in the Pali Canon, studied historically and philosophically in the light of the contemporary, earlier and later literary evidence related to the subject. The antiquity and authenticity of the material is vouchsafed by the literary, linguistic, ideological, sociological and historical evidence existing in to Pali Canon itself. The Kuthodaw Pagoda Project was established for the purpose of photographing, documenting and studying the Kuthodaw Pagoda site and its Pali language inscriptions.
